Tras varios años de esterilidad creativa, el pintor Ismael G. es invitado a impartir una asignatura de Historia del Arte en la misma universidad donde, hace 23 años, estudió la carrera de Bellas Artes. Inseguro y lleno de dudas, acabado como pintor, decide repetir, palabra por palabra, el curso que él mismo recibió en el pasado del que fuera su antiguo profesor, hoy desaparecido en extrañas circunstancias. Durante esa clase, habla con sus estudiantes de que ninguna obra de arte puede existir de modo aislado, sino que todas, de un modo u otro, están entrelazadas y forman parte de un mismo tejido referencial. Y mientras lo hace, Ismael cree reconocer, entre los estudiantes de las primeras filas, a un muchacho idéntico a sí mismo, como si, al igual que ocurre en el arte, también la vida se repitiera buscando los mismos paralelismos y patrones.

Richmal Crompton nació en Bury, Lancashire, en 1890, y murió en 1969. Su nombre completo era Richmal Crompton Lamburn. Estudió Lenguas Clásicas y de joven fue sufragista; durante unos años se dedicó a la enseñanza del Latín y el Griego, hasta que padeció poliomielitis y hubo de abandonar la docencia en 1923: cargó ya para siempre con una pierna casi inútil y un bastón en la mano. Nunca se casó ni tuvo hijos, lo cual no le impidió pasarse la vida en contacto con niños, pues entre 1922 y 1968 escribió y publicó treinta y ocho volúmenes con las andanzas de uno de los jóvenes más admirados, envidiados e imitados de la literatura mundial, Just William en Inglaterra o Guillermo Brown en España, también conocido como Guillermo el Proscrito y Guillermo el Travieso, cuyas inolvidables correrías gozaron de extraordinario éxito entre los chicos de varias generaciones.
